How long has it been since you’ve searched for a job? If you’re like one of the hundreds of thousands of Texans who have been unemployed over the last year you know it can be challenging, overwhelming and often discouraging if you’ve been unsuccessful at it. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the unemployment rate in Texas from November 2013 to November 2014 has gone from 6.1% to 4.9%. Texas currently ranks number 16 for lowest unemployment rates in the nation. If we look at the numbers in terms of people rather than percentages then the number of people unemployed in 2013 was 777,861. That’s a staggering number of people without work. The 1.2% decrease in unemployment over the course of a year doesn’t sound like much, but it is. It makes a tremendous difference in the lives of those 134,604 Texans who became employed between 2013 and 2014. According to an article recently published by SHRM’s HR Magazine there are four practices that can help decrease the numbers in long term unemployment.
The four steps include:
- To ensure that advertising does not discourage or discriminate against unemployed individuals.
- Review screens or procedures in recruiting and hiring processes so they do not intentionally or inadvertently disadvantage individuals from being considered for a job based solely on their unemployment status.
- Review current recruiting practices to ensure that they case a broad net and encourage all qualified candidates, including the long-term unemployed, to consider applying.
- Share best practices-including successes with hiring the long-term unemployed in your own company-with your organization and across your supply chain, with staffing firms, employer associations and the broader business community.
