How to Properly Lift Heavy Equipment

3 Simple Tips to Properly Lift Heavy Equipment

Proper lift technique is extremely important for your safety! Improperly lifting heavy objects can potentially lead to serious back injuries. While some back injuries are a result of sudden trauma, most occur after continuous use of improper technique.

  1. Always squat, never bend!

When lifting material, always be sure to squat down in order to lift. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart. Do not bend at the waist to pick something up, doing so can result in serious injury. Bend your hips and knees to lower down to the load, then straighten your legs to lift.

  1. Avoid Turning.

If you must turn while holding a heavy object, do so by moving with your feet rather than turning with your waist. Be especially aware while lifting the object to never twist your body. If you turn your body or waist while lifting heavy equipment, you can pull a muscle or even worse injure your spine!

  1. Lift Close to Your Body.

When you lift and move items close to your body and use your legs when lifting, it puts less stress on your back. Bending not only strains your back when lifting, it also moves the load away from your body. This increases strain on your back, shoulders, lower spine and fatigues your muscles. Always stand as close to the load as possible when lifting.

While these tips may seem small, they can make a huge difference on your everyday habits. Safe work practices are achieved by consistency and proper technique!
