4 Tips to Land That Job

When searching for a job, the hardest part isn’t always the interview, it’s getting a call back. In a world that is constantly trying to make you fit in, how do you stand out? How do you make your potential employer see that you are the right candidate for the job?  According to Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin, a few of the best practices to follow in job interviews are:

  1. Do Your Research
    • “Researching your prospective employer and those with whom you’ll be interviewing is the most important step to succeeding at an interview.” Having knowledge about the company and your potential role will help you generate answers to any question they may ask. Make sure you are up to date on any company news or future plans too!
  2. Make a List of Potential Questions you might get asked, and write your best answers
    • “Write up your answers to any challenging questions in detail, and practice saying them out loud or even to a friend. This allows you to put your best foot forward and to reply with confidence in the interview itself.” For example, if you have been out of work for a while, you will most likely be asked why and what you have been doing in the meantime. If you are changing industries, you will likely be asked why and what skills you have to bring to that position.
  3. Pay Attention to Body Language
    • “Body language is an often overlooked but vitally important aspect of the interview process—both from your perspective and from that of the interviewer.” Crossing your arms during an interview and not making eye contact can be taken negatively from an employer. Make sure that you are sitting comfortably, engaging in conversation, and smiling. This will give the interviewer a positive vibe from you.
  4. Dress the Part
    • “As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. This is particularly true in a job interview. Make sure you are dressed appropriately for your industry, that you are well-rested and well-groomed on the day of the interview, and that you show up on time—if not five minutes early!” You never want to miss out on a job opportunity because you did not look professional enough. Make sure to do your research about the position you are being interviewed for and if you have questions make sure to ask the recruiter.

Whether you are a beginner trying to get ahead in the workplace or a veteran in your field, you always need to know how to interview well. The simple things you say or do in an interview can make or break your chances with a company. Make sure to always put your best foot forward and make sure they remember your name.
